The Vidicoder Model 3000 Series of H.261 based products permit the acquisition, compression, and transmission of real-time video with full motion and full color.  Features include: NTSC or PAL video; composite or S-video; advanced DCT [see below] compensation; and data rates from 16 Kbps to 3 Mbps.  All rack mountable products are fit to a standard 19" equipment rack, and firmware programming of the compression engine allows the units to be tailored to special applications.

The Vidicoder line of video codecs utilizes an advanced video compression technique based on the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT).  This algorithm incorporates inter-frame coding and motion compensation, compressing not only within a frame but also between frames.  This technique significantly outperforms motion JPEG and DPCM systems in both picture quality and reduced bandwidth.  At lower data rates, the user can trade off picture quality against frame rate depending on the application's requirements.

The Model 2000 Series of MPEG-2 based products permit real-time digital transmission of very high quality video, audio, and data at a variety of communication rates.  These modules incorporate the MPEG-2 compression algorithm, which is used in HDTV and Digital Satellite Broadcast TV systems.  The MPEG-2 standard is also being adopted by the Dept of Defense as the preferred means of transmitting video imagery.  The MPEG-2 Series can be clocked at rates from 2 Mbps to 15 Mbps using an internal or external clock.

These modules support horizontal resolution of up to 720 pixels per line and 480 lines per frame for NTSC (576 lines per frame for PAL).  The compression algorithm is fully compliant with MPEG-2 Main Profile at Main Level (MP@ML) plus the extensions for enhanced chroma support of 4:2:2.  Programmable functions within the encoding algorithm allow the module to be tailored for a variety of applications and quality levels.

The DBRITE Video Compression (DVC) System was developed to provide a practical, reliable, and cost-effective alternative to TMLs (Television Microwave Links).  The DVC-2000 system compresses the DBRITE video signal for transmission over available narrow-band data links.  The video compression unit accepts the video output of a DBRITE digital scan converter, and the video decompressor unit provides video to a tower display unit.  Since these units interface with the data communications network equipment (DSU/CSUs), DVC-2000 serves as a "drop-in" replacement for TML systems.  Furthermore, since the system provides a 2400 bps data port, it eliminates the requirement for a separate data link for the control data (RCU, keyboard/PEM).
